Why Male Sexual Dysfunction Isn’t as Uncommon as You Think

The development of sexual enhancement drugs, such as Viagra and Cialis, has caused the term “erectile dysfunction” to go mainstream. Before the emergence of treatment methods that were readily available to men, there was little to no open discussions when it came to male sexual dysfunction. While the discussion of erectile dysfunction has become a more common topic, there is still a misconception that male sexual dysfunction is an uncommon occurrence, when the truth is that it is a condition that this much more common than the average person realizes.

Silent Conversations on Heavy Topics

For a number of different reasons, the conversation involving male sexual dysfunction is rarely approached. While men have no problem discussing sports, aging and women with one another, it is rare for a man to confide with another man about problems they may be having in the area of sexual performance. The lack of common dialogue on the topic may lead some to believe that the condition is not that common; however, the rise in the number of facilities that offer highly effective treatment options for male sexual dysfunction presents a different reality.

Erectile Dysfunction is Quite Common

According to a recent report on erectile dysfunction, over 18 million men in the U.S. suffer from some level of sexual dysfunction. As high as five percent of men in their forties suffer from erectile dysfunction, and up to 25 percent of men age 65 and older suffer from the condition, indicating that age does play a role in the development of the condition.

Failing to Report the Condition to Physicians

Even the aforementioned numbers are likely understated, due to the fact that men fail to report the condition to their physicians, which is one of the primary sources for compiling information on the condition. When men refuse to report the condition to their doctors, it leads to skewed numbers that reflect a low occurrence, which in turn makes men feel as if they are alone when they begin to develop symptoms of sexual dysfunction. It is likely that if men knew how common the condition is, they most likely would be more willing to report it.

Unfortunately, when men refuse to discuss the condition with their primary care physician, it is likely that they will go untreated, or they will attempt to self-treat their symptoms. The increase in centers that specialize in treating these types of conditions in men and women, has provided an alternative for men who do not wish to involve their primary care doctor. They may feel more comfortable in an environment in which they know other men are dealing with the same issues that they are dealing with.

While age does play a role in the occurrence of erectile dysfunction, experts point to the fact that it is not a natural part of the aging process, and it should not be accepted as such. In most instances, there are a number of treatment options available to help men overcome the condition and reclaim their ability to perform in the bedroom.
